Charcoal Water Filter Sticks and Why You Need Them
Charcoal water filters make tap water taste better by softening hard water, adding good minerals like magnesium, potassium and calcium, and absorbing unwanted impurities, heavy metals and chemicals like chlorine and copper.
Why use charcoal sticks to filter your water?
Charcoal water filters are a fantastic way to not only make tap water taste more pleasant, but also to significantly benefit your health. Charcoal filters are particularly popular amongst the Japanese who have been enjoying the benefits since the 17th century.

What is activated charcoal?
Not to be confused with the stuff you put on your barbeque, activated charcoal has a wide range of health benefits and is one of the most effective ways of removing water impurities such as chlorine, which is commonly found in tap water.
Binchotan activated charcoal is a natural, sustainable water filter that can improve the taste of tap water and replace any harmful chemicals in the water with minerals. They are a great alternative to plastic water filters and single use water bottles.
Sources of activated charcoal are 100% natural and organic with wood being one of the most commonly used sources. To produce Binchotan charcoal, harvested wood is placed in a kiln and is slowly charred at a low temperature. The temperature is then increased to 100 degrees Celcius towards the end of the process. The charcoal is powdered with a fusion of earth, sand and ash giving the charcoal that shade of white (hence the name: ‘white charcoal’). The exposure to high temperature followed by sudden intense cooling gives the charcoal that smooth, hard finish.
How charcoal water sticks work
Activated charcoal sticks have an extremely porous texture that traps all impurities, heavy metals and chemicals like chlorine and copper that can be often found in tap water. In turn, the activated charcoal sticks soften your water and emit minerals like calcium, magnesium and potassium which all contribute positively to your health.
Ideally, leave your charcoal stick in your water overnight for maximum effect, however the process can kick in within an hour leaving you with noticeably tastier water. Charcoal sticks can for last six months of daily use and at the end of their life cycle they can be composted or put into the fire.
Turn any bottle into a water filter bottle
The Black + Blum Binchotan charcoal filter can be used to turn virtually any bottle into a filter bottle to make your tap water taste great.
At the end of its life this completely natural product can be added to your compost bin, broken up and added to plants as fertiliser, burned on the fire or even used as a shoe deodoriser!
Black+Blum Eau Good Water Bottles
The Black+Blum 800 ml Eau Good Water Bottle features a built-in XL Charcoal filter stick. It’s natural cork stopper ensures that it’s fully leak-proof and they are available in a variety of different colours including black, red, purple, lime and blue.
What we love about these bottles is that rather than trying to hide the charcoal filter with their design like most other water bottles that have this feature, Black+Blum use the binchotan charcoal sticks in their raw state and display them with pride. It’s curvy shape means that the filter can slot easily into the side of the bottle, and it also makes it really convenient to hold. The charcoal filters in the bottles last six months when used daily, before having to be replaced.
Luckily, these filters are also available separately on our website whenever your bottle’s filter needs replacing.
